• COUNTER PROTESTS FILL THE STREETS OF BENGHAZI
    22 Sep 2012, 07:11pm BY Sobana Damodaran

Ten days after four Americans were killed in Benghazi, thousands of Ansar al-Shariah supporters gathered in the Libyan city on Friday to protest against an anti-Muslim film produced in the United States.

The protestors however were dwarfed by a counter rally against the militia group itself, as thousands marched through the eastern city demanding the disbanding of powerful militias.

The militias have become more powerful than the regular security forces, and successive governments since last year's fall of Moammar Gadhafi have been unable to rein them in.

The attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, in which Ansar al-Shariah is suspected of participating, has sparked a backlash among many Libyans against the multiple armed factions that have run rampant for months in cities around the country.
