• DEPARTING PEACE ENVOY ANNAN TO ASSURE "SMOOTH TRANSITION" IN SYRIA
    3 Aug 2012, 07:20pm BY Sobana Damodaran

International mediator Kofi Annan, who has resigned from his post as Joint Special Envoy to Syria today said that he will continue to work for a "smooth transition" in Syria.

The former U.N. Secretary-General, quit as international peace envoy for Syria on Thursday saying he was frustrated by "finger-pointing" at the UN while the armed rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad becomes increasingly bloody.

His mission, centred on an April ceasefire that never took hold, has looked irrelevant as fighting has intensified in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere.

Annan suggested that his successor may have better luck.
