Penang police today foiled two suicide attempts by the father of a national athlete.
Based on preliminary information Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner, Azman Abdul Lah said the 59-year-old man was facing internal family problems.
Azman said police were notified of a man crying by the sea near Queensbay Mall in Bayan Lepas around 4am.
Officers at the scene managed to coax him out of the attempt and persuaded him to return home three hours later.
The patrol car tailed the man, who was driving his own car, to ensure his safety.
But upon reaching the Penang Bridge around 7.45am, the man suddenly stopped the car by the bridge, alighted and tried to jump into the sea.
Police immediately swung into action and prevented his second suicide attempt.
The man was then brought to the Seberang Perai Tengah police district headquarters to have a statement recorded.
