A police officer was killed when the car he was driving grazed into a lorry carrying iron ore early this morning.

The incident occurred at 1:20am at kilometer 197 of the East-coast highway.

48 year old Inspector Muhammad Azman Arifin, from the Kuantan Police Headquarters died at the scene due to serious head injuries.

According to Kuantan Police Chief,  ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusof the victim was on his way back from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan when he tried to overtake the fully loaded lorry.

However, he lost control of the car and grazed the right side of the lorry causing the car to spin a few times

The lorry driver however escaped unhurt.
